STORAGE SOLUTIONS IN A SMALL HOME

I’m frequently asked how I keep my house so clean / de-cluttered all the time. While I will preface with, our Instagram feed is not a 24/7 depiction of what our home actually looks like, I DO genuinely keep a very clean tidy home for my own sanity. I’m not the kind of person who can relax in clutter or messes. A well organized home where everything has a place is best for my mental health, and honestly makes me a kinder human being.

Our home is roughly 1900 sq ft and does not have a single bit of storage or closet space outside of the bedrooms. No linen closets, hall closets, coat closets, nothing.. We do have a garage thankfully, but not a well organized one (hopefully changing soon).

So how do we do it?

FIRST: BUY BASKETS, LOTS OF THEM

I have large wicker baskets in almost every room in our house. These are wonderful for catch all items such as throw blankets, extension cords, extra chargers, magazines, etc. My downstairs baskets currently contain: throw blankets, my breast pump, extension cord, Vivi’s toys, magazines, dog collars and more. They also double as beautiful texture and look good just about anywhere.

Here are a few examples and ones we love!

BUILT INS WITH LOWER STORAGE

If you have the space, our built ins are a big life saver in our downstairs. They’re beautiful decor statements on the top half, and hide ugly storage on the bottom half. We have one dedicated to DVDS, one dedicated to Viv (extra bibs, burp cloths, her boppy, toys, pump accessories, wipes, diapers) one for electronics (it hides our tv box, xbox and remotes/controllers) and the final one is shelf decor I switch out seasonally.

WELL ORGANIZED CLOSETS

Use your closets to their full potential. We knew Viv was going to have tiny clothes so we opted for TONS of shelves in hers and they help so much. The walk in closet in our bedroom used to be two rows of hanging rods all the way around, we took them down, opted for one hanging rod, shelves and dressers and it functions so much better.

FURNITURE / DRESSERS / BUFFETS

This thrifted buffet in our living room has so much room in it. We tend to hoard throw blankets and stash them all in here. I also love the look of a dresser outside of a bedroom. If you’re home has space, tucking one into a living room somewhere or in a hallway nook can be really beautiful, I use ours in the living room for books, my laptop, cords, camera, tripod and other miscellaneous items.

And never underestimate a great armoire or chest (still currently searching for one).

Lastly, just as a general rule of thumb..

You’d be surprised how much more “storage” you have when things are properly organized and cleaned with regularity. Keeping things tidy has a way of making us feel better about the space we use. I’ve recently adopted a “cleaning calender” schedule that I’m sharing on our Instagram and stories and it’s helping immensely.

Until next time friends
