DIY OPEN SHELVING

DIY OPEN SHELVING

I'm constantly sharing on Instagram how we build our shelves, what stain we use, where I buy my brackets etc.. I've also included a small how to in our Heart of the Home post but I thought the shelving deserved a dedicated post itself.

So here is a play by play of our DIY open shelving:

  1. All of our shelves are 2 x 10 - we buy untreated wood from Lowe's

  2. Our brackets are also from Lowe's. They only sell them in a standard stainless steel, so I spray paint them and the screws a matte black.

  3. Figure out your desired length + cut.

  4. We use Minwax Weathered Oak for the Stain, one coat brushed on is plenty.

  5. Drill your brackets into your wall, and your shelves to your brackets. Always be sure to check with a level, and if possible screw your L brackets into studs. Where there are no studs we use dry wall anchors; Hillman Strap-Toggle drywall anchors for our heavy duty kitchen items, such as large bowls and dishes ( they hold up to 80 lbs ). For our bathrooms we use a smaller traditional plastic style anchor.

  6. DONE!

So easy and so pleasing to the eye! I love shelving. I love the impact is makes on a space and decorating them through the seasons. It's such a fun way to spruce up a wall with a small budget.
